Smog Checks & Emissions: How to Clear the Hold

Why your registration still shows a hold after passing smog

Updated over a month ago

Passing a smog or emissions test does not clear a registration hold immediately. Even when the test station submits your results electronically, your state’s motor vehicle authority still needs time to process and apply that result to your vehicle record.

Until the state finishes that processing, the hold remains visible in the Reviver app and your digital plate cannot update. This delay is common and varies by state.

For example:

  • In some states, you must pass emissions before registration renewal becomes available.

  • In others, you may be able to pay first, but the digital tag will not update until the emissions result is officially cleared by the state.

This lag is the most common reason users see a hold even after passing smog.

What to do next

Open the Reviver app and check whether any outstanding items are listed on the home screen. If the app shows that no action is required, your registration is simply waiting on state processing.

Make sure your phone is paired and connected to the RPLATE via Bluetooth, as this is required for normal plate operation and updates. If pairing is needed, the app will guide you through the on-screen steps.

If the hold remains for longer than expected or you’re unable to renew in the app, contact Reviver Support.
